What not to do on an Empire no-heat call
Let me start with the short version: if you've got an Empire Comfort Systems propane heater or gas log set that won't stay lit, check the solenoid valve first. Not the thermocouple. Not the spark igniter. The solenoid valve.
I've been running emergency service calls on Empire Comfort Systems equipment for about 15 years. I've handled more than 400 after-hours heating failures, and a big chunk of them trace back to one small electrical component—the solenoid coil. It's not a hard fix. But if you skip the test process, you'll waste money, time, and a second visit.
This is the checklist I use on no-heat calls. Seven steps. Plus a few mistakes to avoid. It's aimed at service techs and facility managers who work with Empire propane heaters and gas logs. It's also for anyone who has ever promised a client heat by the next morning—and meant it.

Step 1: Confirm what you're actually working on
Before ordering anything, read the nameplate. Empire Comfort Systems makes gas fireplaces, gas log sets, wall heaters, unit heaters, and thermostats. An Empire Comfort Systems propane heater and an Empire Comfort Systems gas log set can look similar from outside, but the gas trains are different. I lost an afternoon once because I assumed a customer's 'Empire heater' was a wall furnace. It was a gas log set. The 'heater' was the firebox.

Step 2: Rule out the gas supply before you touch the valve
This step sounds too simple, and that's exactly why it's here. For propane, check the tank gauge and the service valve. For natural gas, check the appliance shut-off and the line pressure. I've diagnosed a 'failed solenoid' for 45 minutes—only to find the gas valve was closed. A dog had learned to nudge the lever.

Step 3: Test the solenoid valve
The solenoid valve is an electrically operated shut-off. When the thermostat calls for heat, the solenoid opens and gas flows. If the coil is bad, you'll hear no click, no gas, no burner.
Here's something parts vendors won't tell you: 'in stock' often means at a warehouse, not on a truck. Use the test below before you trust a shipping date.
My test procedure is simple:
- Turn the thermostat up. Listen for a click at the valve.
- No click? Measure the coil resistance with a multimeter. Compare it to the resistance in the installation manual.
- Check the wire connectors. Loose spade terminals are the reason I do the other two steps.
Most people skip the wire connectors. I did. The first time I replaced a solenoid valve on an Empire Comfort Systems gas log set, the problem came back the next week. It wasn't the solenoid. It was a corroded connector.
The frustrating part of these calls? Most no-heat issues are simple. You'd think a loose connector would be the first thing techs check, but everyone wants to sell a valve. Do the mechanical basics first.

Step 4: Look at the burner and gas log placement
If the solenoid valve clicks and the thermostat is working, the issue moves to the burner. On Empire Comfort Systems gas logs, the ceramic logs have a specific placement. If a log sits too close to the burner ports, it can block flame. Carbon buildup on the logs is another clue. A healthy gas fire has a blue flame; a lazy yellow flame with soot is a warning sign.
For any propane burner, check the manifold pressure with a manometer. After every repair, test with a CO monitor. That's non-negotiable.

Step 5: Test the thermostat and safety controls
Empire Comfort Systems heaters use limit switches that can interrupt the solenoid valve opening. If a high-limit switch has tripped, no signal reaches the valve. Test the thermostat by following the wiring diagram in the manual. Jumper the heat call if you need to, but never bypass a limit switch to make the unit run. That's not troubleshooting. It's a hazard.

Step 6: Do the total-cost math before buying the replacement
The part price is the smallest number on the invoice. I use total cost of ownership for every repair decision, and I'm not going to apologize for it.
Say a generic solenoid valve looks like the right part and costs $35. The factory-specific part costs $75. The generic arrives in four days, so your client has no heat for four nights. The factory part is at the local distributor and can be picked up this afternoon. For a rented house, one cold night might mean a rent reduction. For a strip-mall tenant, it's lost appointments. The point: don't let a $40 difference drive a $1,000 decision.
Last winter, I helped a Hand and Stone franchise in a strip mall fix an Empire Comfort Systems propane heater. The first contractor had ordered a generic solenoid valve online because it was $38 cheaper. The shipping date was seven days out. The manager counted lost appointments and canceled the order. It takes fifteen extra minutes and catches intermittent solenoid problems, bad wire connections, and gas pressure issues.

What not to do on an Empire no-heat call
- Don't replace the solenoid valve before checking the connectors.
- Don't use a universal part without comparing coil resistance and voltage to the original spec.
- Don't call a generic part 'OEM-grade' unless you've verified it. That follows the same principle as the FTC's substantiation requirement, and it's a good habit for a service invoice.
- Don't forget that downtime is part of the total cost.
Here's the bottom line: confirm what's installed, verify gas, test the solenoid valve, inspect the logs, and run the full cycle. That's the whole checklist. It's saved my customers more money than any discount part ever did.
